We first see the Sentry in the hands of Rhom when she finds it at her first night working salvage in the Outlands, and she decides to sell it on the black market in The Rankless District instead of reporting it to the guilds. Val-El shows Seg-El and Adam Strange what the Sentry should look like by scanning the shell Brainiac sent it in. But it’s Adam Strange that discovers it on the black market, but as he does not have the money to pay for it he steals it and runs away to Kem's Tavern to hide behind the bar as he shows Kem and Seg-El what he found.

As they make their way back to the Fortress of Solitude they end up getting trapped in the "Rankless Initiative" and Seg tells Adam to get away as they scan the faces and he will not be known. Adam manages to get back to the Fortress of Solitude and as Val scans the Sentry they learn that it has already taken a host.
